The Probation Service is an executive agency within the Department of Justice. We play an important role in helping to reduce the level of crime and to increase public safety by working with offenders to help change their behaviour and make good the harm done by crime. We are the lead agency in the assessment and management of offenders in our community.
The Probation Service is holding an open competition for the appointment of Research Officer (Higher Executive Officer).

The Role:
The successful candidate for Research Officer (Higher Executive Officer) will be an integral part of the Data and Research Team working to the Senior Data & Analytics Manager and alongside the Statistician on secondment from the Central Statistics Office and the wider management team in providing data and research internally, and managing the research of external researchers on topics of relevance to the Probation Service.
As part of the Data and Research Team, the Research Officer (Higher Executive Officer) will help to achieve a modernised data driven approach in the Probation Service, in keeping with our goals as outlined in the Strategy Statement 2024-2026, with a particular focus on metrics to inform the future direction of the Service.
The role also provides an opportunity for the right candidate to initiate and publish research as well as contributing to significant research projects across the wider Criminal Justice System and to build data skills and experience.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Identifying research needs internally and driving and managing external research on probation practice and related matters. This will involve maintaining and further developing a network of academic researchers.
- Supporting a number of research, analysis and/or modelling projects across the Probation Service, including dealing with internal and external research queries.
- Contributing to developing the Probation Service strategic data and research strategy, and using evidence based data and research approaches in developing new research for the Probation Service.
- Developing and maintaining a knowledge base on national and international probation and relevant criminology research.
- Helping improve data quality by identifying gaps and opportunities with currently recorded data.
- Writing high-quality reports, summary documents, providing insights and analyses; preparing briefings and presentations.
- Building and maintaining positive stakeholder relationships with the Department of Justice, agencies, offices and bodies across the criminal justice sector.
