IPRT Open Forum 2010: Exploding Prisoner Numbers (June 2010)
The Irish Penal Reform Trust recently hosted an Open Public Forum, entitled Exploding Prisoner Numbers – Causes, Effects and Solutions. The event, which was chaired by the Inspector Prisons, Judge Michael Reilly, outlined the causes of rocketing prison numbers in Ireland, and identified some practical solutions to the prisons crisis.
Speakers at the event were: Tom O’Malley, Senior Lecturer in Law, NUI Galway and the Irish Sentencing Information System; Vivian Geiran, Deputy Director, The Probation Service; Assistant Commissioner Louis Harkin, An Garda Síochána; and Dr Mary Rogan, Chairperson of the Irish Penal Reform Trust.
The panellists also responded to questions from the floor which came from, among others: Senator Ivana Bacik; John Clinton, the Irish Prison Officers Association; Paul Mackay, former member of the Mountjoy Prison Visiting Committee; and Tina Roche, Chief Executive, Business in the Community Ireland.
The event took place on Monday 28th June, 2010 at the Morrison Hotel, Ormond Quay, Dublin 1.
