Probation Reports
Under the Children Act, 2001, courts are required to request a probation officer’s report on offenders under eighteen years of age, where the court is of the opinion that the appropriate decision would be to impose:
- a community sanction;
- detention; or
- detention and supervision.
In addition, all reasonable efforts should be made to ensure reports are prepared in the minimum period necessary but not in any case exceeding 28 days.
For further information on probation reports, please see our detailed guidance on the The Probation and Welfare Service and the Children Act, 2001 on our publications page.
