Probation work with adults
The responsibilities of the Probation Officers in their work with adult offenders referred through the courts and the Irish Prison Service can be summarised as follows:
- To provide the courts with advice and information on offenders to assist in sentencing decisions through the provision of pre-sanction reports
- To implement and enforce community sentences passed by the courts
- To design, provide and promote effective programmes for supervising offenders safely in the community for public protection
- To assist offenders, before and after release, to lead pro-social lives which minimise risk to the public.
